Free of Volatile Organic Compounds Protection against Moisture in Building Materials/Zabezpieczenia Przegród Budowlanych Przed Wilgocią Wolne Od Lotnych Związków Organicznych

Abstract: Abstract:The article presents information about moisture protection of building materials. The discussed parameters determining the efficiency of the water protection are material porosity, water absorptivity and surface condition of building materials. Moreover the ecological aspect of hydrophobic VOC-free preparations available on the market has been underlined. The first part of the article is a description of moisture problem in the building envelopes and the possibilities of its prevention. The special at… Show more

“…Methyl-silicon resin (R) increased the frost resistance by 77-84%, while alkyl-alkoxysiloxane (A) raised it by 66-80% in relation to the reference samples. The layer of polisiloxane resin protected the surface against the infiltration of water, and consequently, against the destructiveness of ice [3,[9][10][11].…”

“…However, waste polyurethane foam can be a reason for increased wettability of mortars, hence after they have been prepared, a surface hydrophobisation should be considered. The purpose of our further research [3,[9][10][11] was the evaluation of the possibility of applying hydrophobising preparations based on silica-organic compounds in the protection of lightweight mortars and concrete with construction waste, as well as water and wastewater management.…”

“…Damage caused by moisture is a major factor in the degradation of building materials [22][23][24]. Water repellent treatment is one of the methods of protecting the surface of lightweight aggregate-concrete [25,26]. As a result of hydrophobisation, the absorption of capillary water decreases, which allows for proper water vapour permeability.…”

“…One of the methods used to protect the lightweight aggregate-concrete surface is hydrophobisation [21,22]. It causes a decrease in capillary water absorption, thus allowing free vapour permeability.…”
