Free radical scavenging activity of Cleome gynandra L. leaves on adjuvant induced arthritis in rats

Abstract: The generation of free radicals has been implicated in the causation of several diseases of known and unknown etiologies such as, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, cancer, etc., and compounds that can scavenge free radicals have great potential in ameliorating these disease processes. The present study was aimed to investigate the possible anti-oxidant potential of Cleome gynandra leaf extract at a dose of 150 mg/kg body weight for 30 days on adjuvant induced arthritis in experimental rats. Oral administration o… Show more

“…Our previous studies indicates that extract of A. marmelos possess the polyphenol and flavonoids compounds that modulates the activity of enzymic and nonenzymic antioxidants and enhances the defense against ROS-generated damage in diabetic rats and Cleome gynandra leaf extract contains high content of glycosides and flavonoids and possess significant anti-arthritic activity as evidenced by mediated through its inhibiting effect on the formation of lipid peroxide and effective free radical scavenging activity [74,75].…”

“…Free radicals such as Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are small, highly reactive, oxygen-containing molecules continuously in the cells as a consequence of both enzymatic and nonenzymatic reactions 6 and can react with and damage complex cellular molecules such as fats, proteins, or DNA 7 . In low/moderate concentrations free radicals are involved in normal physiological functions but excess production of free radicals or decrease in antioxidant level leads to oxidative stress 8 .…”
