Free radical-scavenging activity of indolic compounds in aqueous and ethanolic media

Abstract: Indolic compounds are a broad family of substances present in microorganisms, plants and animals. They are mainly related with tryptophan metabolism, and present particularities that depend on their respective chemical structures. The most important members of the family are the plant hormone, indole-3-acetic acid, and the animal hormone, melatonin. An important characteristic of some indolic compounds is that they may be useful as chemical preventive agents against diseases such as cancer, oxidative stress, e… Show more

“…Animals can obtain IAA from intestinal absorption of a diet rich in vegetables or from synthesis from tryptophan in various tissues. 6 Studies have showed that IAA can provide antioxidant activity by inhibiting lipid peroxidation similarly to other indolic compounds 7,8 and provide semen preservation at similar concentrations 9 in water coconut 10 ; in addition, IAA have a topic antiinflammatory action. 11 Recent studies have shown that oral or subcutaneous administration of IAA can promote a possible beneficial effect by increasing the phagocytic capacity of rat neutrophils.…”

“…It has been reported that GOA was synthesized from indole-3-acetic acid, which is known to be a plant hormone and also an antioxidant, 26) through HOA in the kernels of supersweet corn after seed germination. GOA and HOA have been suggested to be inactive metabolites of indole-3-acetic acid; 25) however, the antioxidative effects of these substances were demonstrated here and may protect seeds against oxidative stress, rather than simply being inactive metabolites of indole-3-acetic acid.…”

“…In recent years, many physiological properties of MLT have been described resulting in much attention in the development of synthetic compounds possessing the indole ring. Synthetic indole derivatives such as indole-3-propionic acid 7 , indole amine-triazoles 8 , and stobadine 9 have shown significant antioxidant activity. Our group identified the antioxidant activity of MLT analogue indole derivatives such as 2-phenylindoles 10 , indole-3-propionamides 11 , 5-bromoindole hydrazide/hydrazones derivatives 12 , and N-methylindole hydrazide/hydrazones 13 .…”
