Free radical scavenging and cytoprotective activities of phenolic antioxidants

Abstract: The free radical scavenging activities of three flavonoids (quercetin, rutin and catechin) and four hydroxycinnamic acids (caffeic, ferulic, sinapic, and chlorogenic acids) were evaluated using both oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and lipid peroxidation inhibition capacity (LPIC) assays. The cytoprotective effects of these compounds were also measured by the degree of protection against H(2)O(2)-induced damage of human Jurkat cells. All compounds exhibited protection against H(2)O(2)-mediated cytotox… Show more

“…They also confirm previous observations in vitro on wine polyphenols' inhibitory activity on CRP levels [17]. Extra-virgin olive oil, in particular, and fruits, vegetables, wine, and fish are important components of a Mediterranean diet that is rich in polyphenols and simple phenols [18,3,4,5,6]. In this study, we have decided to maintain the usual ad libitum intake of olive oil, but the same extra-virgin olive oil was used for all participants of the study.…”

“…These foods are rich in compounds, known for their antioxidant activity [5]. For example, a fundamental role is played by polyphenols and simple phenols, present in vegetables, wine, and olive oil [6].…”

“…HCAs have been shown to be phytochemicals with remarkable antioxidant outlines they are able; a) to increase the resistance of low density lipoprotein (LDL) to lipid peroxidation [56,79,80]; b) to protect proteins against oxida-tion [81]; c) to chelate transition metals that catalyze oxida-tive reactions [82]; d) to scavenge a variety of ROS [47,[83][84][85][86]; e) to inhibit enzymes that are involved in oxidative stress [48,87].…”

“…However, their studies were focused on ferulic acid related compounds, its alkyl esters and gallic acid esters. Zhang et al (2006) compared the free radical scavenging activity of hydroxycinnamic acids namely caffeic, ferulic and sinapic acid. But they employed the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and lipid peroxide inhibition capacity (LPIC) assays.…”
