Freeform Fabrication of Ceramics via Stereolithography

Abstract: Ceramic green bodies can be created using stereolithography methods where a ceramic suspension consisting of 0.40–0.55 volume fraction ceramic powder is dispersed within an ultraviolet‐curable solution. Three ceramic materials were investigated: silica for investment casting purposes, and alumina and silicon nitride for structural parts. After mixing the powders in the curable solution, the ceramic suspension is photocured, layer by layer, fabricating a three‐dimensional ceramic green body. Subsequent binder r… Show more

“…48 -50 Solid freeform fabrication (SFF) of ceramics is a novel method for producing complex components with locally controlled composition and structure. Several SFF techniques have been developed, including three-dimensional printing (3DP), 51 robocasting, 52 stereolithography, 53 computer-aided manufacturing of laminated engineering materials (CAM-LEM), 54 and fused deposition. 55 Some routes 51,52 rely on the colloidal approach to produce feedstock with the desired rheological and consolidation behavior, while others [53][54][55] require high organic loading.…”
