Freestanding polymeric microdisk laser based on a microfiber knot

Abstract: We experimentally investigate a stable freestanding whispering gallery mode (WGM) microlaser based on polymer microdisk formed by a ~500 µm diameter microfiber knot. A quality factor of about 14 700 and a relatively low lasing threshold with about 38.0 µJ/ pulse are demonstrated in this structure. When a polymer microdisk is pumped by a 532 nm wavelength pulse laser, WGM lasing with a free spectral range (FSR) of 0.15 nm is observed from the polymer microdisk laser. This work provides a convenient and efficien… Show more

“…Whispering gallery mode microresonators (WGMs), with their main advantages of high quality factor and small volume, have been studied and achieved in nonlinear optics [1], cavity quantum electrodynamics [2], optoelectronic devices [3,4] and high-sensitivity sensors [5]. In microcavity sensor applications, they have been used in biological, chemical and physical aspects, including biomolecular detection [6][7][8], gas detection [9,10], solution concentration detection [11], temper ature sensing [12][13][14] and pressure sensing [15,16].…”

“…The polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) has also been reported in micro-nano resonators due to the above characteristics. Researchers have prepared a high-Q freestanding PMMA microdisk laser, but its mechanical strength is low, and it is difficult to prepare a microdisk with a regular shape, resulting in increased threshold [20]. In addition, dye-doped PMMA hollow fiber based on WGM has been realized.…”
