Frequency control of a wind turbine generator–flywheel system

Abstract: The aim of this article is to propose an enhanced frequency regulator of a wind turbine generator associated with a flywheel applying an adaptive fuzzy proportional integral control, to supply a stand-alone load at 50 Hz. The flywheel energy storage system is used to balance the produced and consumed powers; it means the flywheel stores energy in case of power excess and delivers it in the opposite case. This power flow control stabilizes more the frequency around the set point. This hybrid renewable energy sy… Show more

“…Achour et al [87] also investigated the performance of a coupled wind turbine-flywheel system, and highlighted that flywheels are better suited for frequent and fast regulation purposes, compared to batteries, due to their fast recharging potential. The investigation of frequency regulation capability showed that the actual master controller can significantly impact the coupled system performance, and it is recommended to use a fuzzy PI controller instead of the traditional PI one, to achieve better raise time from the flywheel.…”

“…Integration of FESS for frequency control of wind-based systems has been reported in studies by Suvire and Mercado (2012), Achour et al (2017) and Yao et al (2016). Incorporation of FESS for frequency regulation of micro-grid has been analysed in studies by Vidyanandan and Senroy (2016), Jin et al (2017) and Nair and Senroy (2016).…”
