Frequency drifts of 3-min oscillations in microwave and EUV emission above sunspots

Abstract: Aims. We analysed 3-min oscillations of microwave and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission generated at different heights of a sunspot atmosphere, studied the amplitude and frequency modulation of the oscillations, and its relationship with the variation of the spatial structure of the oscillations. Methods. High-resolution data obtained with the Nobeyama Radioheliograph, TRACE and SDO/AIA were analysed with pixelised wavelet filtering (PWF) and wavelet skeleton techniques. Results. Three-minute oscillations in … Show more

“…These waves also form wave trains (e.g. Sych et al 2012), but propagate along the apparent magnetic field lines at essentially sub-sonic speeds, and their periods are typically longer than 120 s. Pascoe et al (2013) developed an advanced numerical model for the dispersive evolution of fast MHD waves in an expanding magnetic field generated by an impulsive, spatially localised energy release with a field-aligned density structure which produced results consistent with the observations of Yuan et al (2013).…”

“…According to this model (see, e.g. Zhugzhda 2008;Botha et al 2011;Sych et al 2012), a broadband initial perturbation develops in a quasi-periodic wave train with the local acoustic cut-off frequency f ac ∝ cos θ/ √ T in the strong magnetic field of the umbra, where θ is the angle between the magnetic field and the vertical and T is the plasma temperature, see Bel & Leroy (1977) for the basic theory, and Konkol et al (2012) for example, and references therein for recent numerical simulations. Thus, assuming that the magnetic field lines in the sunspot atmosphere expand horizontally from the sunspot axis, the frequency f ac decreases in the horizontal direction with the distance from the sunspot axis.…”

“…But we may consider it as a true periodic signal, as it has already been pointed out in earlier studies (e.g. Chorley et al 2010;Sych et al 2012). The nature of the 15 min peak is not known.…”
