Frequency of Chemotherapy Induced Anemia in Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract: Background: Breast cancer is the second most common malignancy in women, worldwide. Several etiologic factors may cause anemia in a patient with breast cancer. Anemia is a prevalent complication in patients with breast cancer who undergo chemotherapy which affects the health status and quality of life in these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of anemia in patients with non-metastatic breast cancer who underwent adjuvant chemotherapy. “…The reason for the large number of patients in anemic population may be also due to considering the WHO scale for anemia in non-pregnant females. The highest rate of anemia in post chemotherapy patients was observed in stage 3 with 59.32% followed by stage 4 in 31.36%.this finding was consistent with the results of Pourali et al 15 who also had the highest rate of anemia in patients with stage 3 tumour (56.9%). This might be due to the fact that most of our patients were diagnosed at higher stages (59.2% in stage 3 and 32% in stage 4), which affects the sampling in such a way that none of the patient was with low-stage breast tumour in the study.…”

“…The age ranged from 25 to 80 years with the median of 52 years. The age of study population is in concordance with the study done by Pourali et al 15 Majority of women were postmenopausal (n= 71, 56.8%) and majority were in the overweight category (n=55, 44%) while 24.8% patients were in obese category, which is considered as a risk factor for carcinoma breast. Tumour sized > 5 cm (T3) had the most prevalence among (n=74, 59.8%) patients.…”

“…Pourali L. (5) and colleagues mentioned that prevalence and severity of anaemia among breast cancer patients in their advanced stages have been well documented, but the same cannot be said those amongst those in the earlier stages. Hence signifying the value of this study as it focuses on detection and evaluation of anti-anaemic treatment among breast patients across various stages (5). Imran M et al, (23) whom conducted a study amongst female breast cancer patients in Saudi Arabia to assess their QOL mentioned that there was a direct relationship between choice of treatments used for breast cancer patients, side effects, medical issues, and QOL.…”
