Frequency of food allergy in Europe: An updated systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Food allergy (FA) is increasingly reported in Europe, however, the latest prevalence estimates were based on studies published a decade ago. The present work provides the most updated estimates of the prevalence and trends of FA in Europe. Databases were searched for studies published between 2012 and 2021, added to studies published up to 2012. In total, 110 studies were included in this update. Most studies were graded as moderate risk of bias. Pooled lifetime and point prevalence of self‐reported FA were 19… Show more

“…Regardless of the mechanism implicated, FA constitutes a major health concern, which affects the quality of life (QoL) of the children with FA, but also their families [ 7 ]. In the last decades, the prevalence of FA has risen, especially in the western world, and currently about 8% of children are reported to be affected [ 8 , 9 ]. To date, no effective treatment has been established, and strict allergen avoidance continues to be the main advice for management, which is difficult to apply [ 10 ].…”

“…Although CM and HE are common food allergens worldwide, especially in the population of young children, 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 10 , 13 , 14 , 15 there are no publications directly comparing their phenotypes. Our aim was to evaluate similarities and differences between these trigger groups.…”

“… 1 , 2 , 3 Cow's milk (CM) and hen's egg (HE) are the top two triggers during the first 2 years of life (1.3% for CM compared to 0.8% for HE). 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 Though their prevalence is not very dynamic, the problem is still clinically relevant, even when most infants outgrow both of these food allergies. 8 , 9 Nevertheless, for children in whom the symptoms persist there is still a high risk of severe anaphylaxis.…”

“…An adverse immune response to food antigens is known as food allergy. The prevalence of food allergy is believed to be at an all-time high, although describing the increasing rates in exact numbers proves a challenge ( 36 39 ). Nevertheless, allergies pose a great challenge to the afflicted individual and their next of kin ( 40 ), and in the absence of a cure ( 41 , 42 ) further mechanistic insight is warranted.…”
