“…In 1 systemic review paper, drug allergy rates were higher among adults mainly for antibiotics, nonsteroidal ant-inflammatory drugs, and anesthetics. [ 28 ] Their results support the current study findings in which adults were 1.25 times more likely to suffer from drug allergies rather than food allergies. It is noteworthy that the rate of biphasic/protracted anaphylaxis in this setting was 6.2%, which was comparable to the findings in the literature that ranged from 10% to 23%.…”

“…The results may, therefore, reflect the degree to which individuals were bothered by these symptoms rather than actual occurrence of the symptoms themselves. Moreover, men may report adverse reactions less frequently than women, 45 and as such this reporting could bias the results if men (but not women) underreported adverse reactions. Active, real-time follow-up of persons prescribed these medications may be needed to disentangle symptom occurrence from other factors influencing individuals' willingness to report a symptom to healthcare providers (eg, the degree to which individuals are bothered by symptoms).…”

“…[17,18] Drug HSRs comprise up to 20% of ADRs and are reported in approximately 8% of general populations. [19,20] Cutaneous reactions, including rash and hives, are the most commonly reported HSRs. [21,22] Although most patients are labelled with an antibiotic allergy at the time of hospital admission, new onset cutaneous HSRs were found to affect approximately 2% of inpatients.…”

“…The frequency of documented drug allergy is higher in women, those of self-reported European ancestry, adults, and in inpatients. [20,24] Female predominance has been stable across multiple studies for reported allergies, especially for antibiotic allergies, but no sex effect has been demonstrated in children. [24,25,45] Patients whose self-determined ancestry is European report more IgE-mediated HSRs.…”
