“…The observed age patterns for twins and triplets (Figures 2 and 3), which show that initial stable rates increased after 1994 only for mothers older than 30, are consistent with a greater proportion of older women requiring reproductive treatments such as reported by Pison & D'addato (2006). For Spain in the year 2000 the corresponding percentages per group of ages of these women were: 14% (≤ 29 years), 37% (30-34), 37% (35-39), and 11% (≥ 40; Andersen et al, 2004).…”

“…The increase in the twinning rate has been attributed to the change in age structure of mothers (Pison & D'addato, 2006), as well as to the extensive practice of assisted reproduction techniques (ART), including the use of ovulation promoters, which began in 1978 (Steptoe & Edwards, 1978). In order to achieve a greater chance of a successful implantation using ART, a large number of embryos are transferred, so the effect of these techniques is expected to be more evident for triplets than for twin deliveries (Astolfi et al, 2003;Eriksson & Fellman, 1973;Eriksson & Fellman, 2004;Luke, 1994).…”

“…A study reported that in many South and South-East Asian countries, including China, India, Indonesia, and Pakistan, the twinning rates remains below 10/1,000 births; likewise, the incidence in Latin American countries is similarly low (less than 9/1,000 births; Smits & Monden, 2011). The rate is also higher than the 1980s pre-ART multiple birth incidence in England and Wales (9.6/1,000 births) and several other West European countries (less than 10/1,000 births; Pison & D'Addato, 2006).…”

“…Normally, the MZ twinning rate is rarely affected by hereditary and environmental factors, and keeps relatively constant, while the DZ twinning rate is affected by heredity, maternal age, parity, diet and assisted reproductive technologies, and is very different for various populations and periods (Vogal & Motulsky, 1997). After undergoing a progressive decline, the twinning rates reversed in the late 1970s and have increased significantly in industrialized countries, and this has raised considerable concern (Pison & D'Addato, 2006). These phenomena were possibly related to demographic features such as maternal childbearing age, birth control, and assisted reproductive technologies (Eriksson & Fellman, 2004;Olsen, 2001;Steinman, 2006;Wilcox et al, 1996).…”
