Pygidiopsis macrostomum Travassos, 1928, originally described based on a single specimen from Rattus norvegicus (Erxleben) in Brazil, has also been reported from a piscivorous bat, Noctilio leporinus mastivus Ribeiro, in Cuba (Odening 1969, Zdzitowiecki & Rutkowska 1980. We have previously redescribed this species from the holotype and adults obtained from hamsters Mesocricetus auratus Waterhouse experimentally infected with metacercariae from naturally infected guppies Poecilia vivipara Bloch and Schneider taken from Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil (Simões et al. 2005). However, other aspects of the life history and biology of this species, especially in relation to the first intermediate host, still need to be elucidated. In this work, the life cycle was completed under laboratory conditions and we provide new host records along with the first descriptions of the redia and cercaria. MATERIALS AND METHODSThe guppies Poe. vivipara, Phalloptychus januarius (Hensel) and Jenynsia multidentata (Jenyns) were collected on the edge of the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, RJ, Brazil (22º57'2"S, 43º11'9"W) and examined for metacercariae. A hydrobiid snail, Heleobia australis (d´Orbigny), was collected in the same lagoon and examined for cercariae. Poe. vivipara and H. australis were reared in the laboratory in filtered lagoon water to provide specimens devoid of infection.Two experimental infections (summer and winter) were performed. For each experiment, one hamster M. auratus was fed with the mesenteries of four naturally infected Poe. vivipara and, on the fourth day postinfection (dpi) each was examined for ovigerous adults of Pyg. macrostomum. Two uninfected stocks of snails (summer and winter) were exposed to infection by placing the eggs of adult Pyg. macrostomum, obtained experimentally from hamsters in their aquaria. Laboratory-reared Poe. vivipara (4 in each experiment for summer and winter) were exposed to cercariae obtained from these experimentally infected H. australis. One hamster for each experiment was fed with the mesenteries of the experimentally infected fish and later examined at four dpi for adults of Pyg. macrostomum.All larval stages and adults were studied live, with or without vital stains. Semi-permanent slides were prepared in glycerine jelly (Moravec 1994) and glycerine/picric acid (Ergens 1969). Other specimens were fixed in 70% alcohol or hot 4% formaldehyde solution, stained with Gomori's trichrome or alcoholic chloridric carmine, cleared in beechwood creosote and mounted in Canada balsam. Illustrations were made with the aid of a drawing attachment on a Leica DM LS2 microscope. Measurements are presented as the range, with the mean in parentheses.For scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specimens were fixed for 1h at rt with 2.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.1 M Na-cacodylate buffer and washed in the same buffer. The family Planorbidae comprises freshwater gastropods with planispiral, spiral and limpet-shaped shells. Subfamily Planorbinae sensu stricto, has a richness of almost 300 species, with some of the main genera being Biomphalaria Preston, 1910 and Drepanotrema Fischer & Crosse, 1880. Some Biomphalaria species are of concern to human health as they are intermediate hosts of blood flukes in Latin America. In Argentina, the family Planorbidae is represented by 15 species in four genera. In Northern Argentina (NOA region), records of the family are scarce, and most of them are a result of occasional collecting. We provide an updated checklist of Planorbinae in NOA resulting from fieldwork, material in malacological collections, and data in the literature. Nine species occur in the area: four species of Biomphalaria and five of Drepanotrema. Among Biomphalaria species, we recorded Biomphalaria straminea (Dunker, 1848), which is considered a natural host of the blood fluke Schistostoma mansoni Sambon, 1907, for first time in Salta province; the known geographic distribution of B. straminea is extended in the country.

“…Biomphalaria havanensis has a distribution from southern Sonora to Colima, Western Mexico, central and southern Oaxaca and from Tamaulipas to Yucatan on the East (Naranjo-García, 1983), it is also present in Florida, Louisiana and Texas in the US (Burch, 1989), in Cuba and Jamaica, Central America and Venezuela (Yong et al 1995(Yong et al , 2001, in Guatemala it is recorded from Lake Dueñas, in Belize from a pond at Boston Village, in San Salvador at El Salvador as Biomphalaria obstructa (Paraense, 2003). The species Drepanotrema lucidum is distributed in Mexico (Harry and Hubendick, 1964), Central America (Paraense, 2003), Central America, the Greater Antilles, some Bahama Islands, and many of the lesser Antilles (Harry and Hubendick, 1964); it also inhabits in Brazil (Paraense, 1975;Thiengo et al,2004), Peru (Paredes et al, 1999), Uruguay (Scarabino, 2004) and Argentina (Paraense, 2005;Gutiérrez Gregoric et al, 2006). Drepanotrema kermatoides inhabits Florida, Texas, Mexico, Central America, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil and Lesser Antilles (Burch, 1989) at Brazil from Rio Grande Patzner et al, 1996 do Sul and Matto Grosso (Paraense, 1975), it is also found in Peru (Paredes et al, 1999), Uruguay (Scarabino, 2004) and Argentina (Paraense, 2005;Gutiérrez Gregoric et al, 2006).…”

The diversity of the freshwater molluscs at El Edén was unknown. This is the fi rst treatment of them, allowing us to compare spatial and temporal species distribution. Eleven species of freshwater molluscs were found in 2 surveys carried in March (dry season) and September (rainy season) 1998 at the reserve El Edén. A total of 266 individuals were collected; 8 pulmonates, Mayabina spiculata, Mexinauta impluviatus, Physa sp., Biomphalaria havanensis, Drepanotrema lucidum, Drepanotrema kermatoides, Planorbella (Pierosoma) trivolvis, and Planorbula armigera; 2 prosobranchs, Pyrgophorus sp. and Pomacea fl agellata; and one bivalve, Musculium transversum. Pulmonata dominate over Prosobranchia species in diversity. No signifi cant differences were observed in diversity between dry and rainy seasons. However, species abundance recorded in both seasons was very low, probably due to a combination of inadequate food resources and disadvantageous climate (periodic conditions of drought and fl ooding). Further studies using a combination of different sampling methods and more frequent samplings are needed to confi rm or identify these factors. We suggest that future studies should focus on cultivation of species with economic potential such as the apple snail Pomacea fl agellata.
