Freshwater sponges (Porifera, Demospongiae) in a benthic filter feeding community at the Guanacaste Dry Forest, Costa Rica

Abstract: The freshwater sponges Trochospongilla variabilis Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago (1973), Radiospongilla crateriformis (Potts, 1882), Spongilla cenota Penney & Racek (1968) and Corvoheteromeyenia heterosclera (Ezcurra de Drago, 1974) compose with the sphaerid bivalve Eupera cubensis (Prime, 1865) and several Phylactolaemata bryozoans a benthic filter feeding community living in seasonal lentic and lotic habitats with high Particulate Organic Carbon (POC), low conductivity and acid pH within the Costa Rica D… Show more

“…Twenty measurements were taken of the gemmoscleres in the fossil gemmules. Table I presents the measures of the gemmoscleres (μm) taken from the gemmules preserved at Cemitério Paleolake, compared to those taken from living specimens presented in Ezcurra de Drago (1979), Volkmer- Ribeiro & Maciel (1983), Volkmer-Ribeiro (1992), Volkmer- Ribeiro & Costa (1992) and Volkmer- Ribeiro & Machado (2009).…”

“…To date, S. cenota distribution is associated with alkaline waters (VolkmerRibeiro and Machado, 2009) of karst geographic regions, except in the Cuajiniquil River (Guanacaste Conservation Area) of Costa Rica. Preferences for various chemical constituencies of water differ among sponge species (Jewell, 1935(Jewell, , 1939Poirrier, 1972;Barton and Addis, 1997;Dröscher and Waringer, 2007;Volkmer-Ribeiro and Machado, 2009). As such, preferences for alkaline waters might partially explain the occurrence of S. cenota within karst geographic regions.…”

“…Posteriormente, Pinheiro & Nicacio (2012) restituyen el género Tubella Carter 1881, considerando Trochospongilla como una sinonimia junior de aquel. Volkmer-Ribeiro & Machado (2009) citan por primera vez la especie para el área caribeña, concretamente en Costa Rica. Nuestra aportación supondría la segunda cita con dos lagunas más para Guanacaste.…”
