Friction stir welding of dissimilar joint of aluminum alloy 5083 and commercially pure titanium

Abstract: In this research, sound dissimilar joints between commercially pure titanium and aluminum alloy 5083 were produced in the butt joint configuration by friction stir welding using a rotation speed of 1120 rpm and a welding speed of 50 mm min −1 . To investigate the properties of the created joint, microstructure and hardness of the weld zone were evaluated. The results show that three zones exist in the stir zone, namely aluminum base metal, titanium base metal, and the area composed of intermetallic compounds o… Show more

“…e obtained hardness value of the weld joints is decreased when moved away from their center [11]. Better hardness values were obtained in the nugget zone more than other zones affected by the welding process [12]. e FSW tool features like shoulder diameter and taper pin profile are instrumental in producing adequate weld surface quality and better mechanical behaviors of sound weld joints [13].…”

“…Recently, the investigation on the welding of Metal matrix composite materials [16,17], polymer matrix composite material [18][19][20], polymers [21] etc., have been focused. Few researchers have attempted to study the weld characteristics of FSW of different grades of the same material like AA2024-T3 and *Corresponding Author's Email: ethiraj.mech@drmgrdu.ac.in (N. “…Sadeghi et al [27] studied butt joints between aluminium 5083 and commercially pure titanium dissimilar alloys friction stir welded at a rotation speed of 50 mmmin -1 and a traverse speed of 1120 mmmin -1 . The hardness of the weld area was 480 HV, which was due to the presence of the interphase compounds of aluminium and titanium.…”
