Friction Stir Welding of EN 10130 Low Carbon Steel

Abstract: After evaluating the weldability of 1.5 mm thick EN 10130 steel sheets, the influence of friction stir welding parameters, i.e., rotation speed, tool advancing speed, pin diameter, and shoulder diameter on the properties of sound joints was examined. Using metallography, scanning electron microscope, tensile test, microhardness measurement, limiting dome height test, and forming limit diagrams, it was found that having a flawless joint requires the rotation and advancing speeds to be in the range of 500-1000 r… Show more

“…All of these techniques have various benefits and drawbacks in terms of price, suitability, labour, education, effectiveness, timing, temperature, and simplicity [3]. Friction stir welding (FSW) has drawn considerable interest from many in a variety of industries, including the automotive sector for combining steel and aluminium alloys [4]. The Welding Institute (TWI), in the United Kingdom, developed the friction stir welding (FSW) procedure in 1991, which was regarded as the most important advancement in metal joining in a decade.…”

“…In general, optimization is carried out by considering a set of pre-defined process parameters, such as tool rotational speed, tool linear travel speed, tool tilt angle, axial force, tool shoulder to pin diameter ratio, etc., keeping in mind some intended objective parameters such as maximum temperature generated, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, hardness, impact strength, etc. 6,13,14) . Most of the engineering processes have a large number of factors that influence the final product.…”
