Frog in the Pond: Gökçeada (Imbros), an Aegean Stepping-stone in the Chalcolithic use ofSpondylusShell

Abstract: The use of marine shells in the manufacture of bracelets and beads is a well-attested phenomenon of the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods of Western Anatolia, the Aegean, and the Balkans. The site of Gökçeada-Uğurlu, located on an island in the Aegean between mainland Europe and Anatolia, shows evidence for the manufacture and use of bracelets and beads from Spondylus and Glycymeris shell. This use of personal ornamentation ties the site into one of the widest material culture production and trade networks of… Show more

“…Chalcolithic-period ornamentation is becoming known, particularly in areas to the west of Canhasan, for the connectedness that it reflects through shared material culture practices and its apparent evidence of exchange that took materials over long distances (see, for example, Baysal, Erdoğu 2014 ). This is also evident to some extent during the Neolithic, for which the course of obsidian and its products has been much discussed (Astruc et al 2011;Belcher 2011;Healey 2013;Healey, Campbell 2014).…”

“…in later Neolithic practices, extends to all areas of ornamentation: bracelets (Baysal et al 2015), beads and pendants. Current evidence suggests that these changing practices might also relate to an increase in the number of specialised production areas and long-distance trade relations that stretched across the Balkans, the Aegean and large portions of Anatolia (Baysal, Erdoğu 2014). The white marble bracelets and the possible ivory bracelet from Canhasan I (that would have derived from a southeastern source, as discussed by French 2010: 156) are examples of this wider trend (see Baysal, Erdoğu 2014: 371-14;Baysal et al 2015).…”
