“…Bito et al (73) reported that 12 hour pretreatment with Pycnogenol significantly inhibited in a dose-dependent manner IFN-γ induced expression of ICAM-1 in the human immortalized keratinocytes cell line HaCAT. This observations pairs with the reported modulatory effects of Pycnogenol on the adhesion of Jurkat T cells to activated keratinocytes in a cocultutre assay (74). Using gel mobility shift assay, it was identified STAT-1 and IRF-1 as two transcription factors affected by Pycnogenol, critical for IFN-γ dependent gene activation (74).…”

“…Pycnogenol 1 with its potent ability to scavenge free radicals ( Blazso et al, 1994;Virgili et al, 1998) may act by blocking these effects of free radicals or may have some other mechanism of action to inhibit cell function and histamine release from mast cells. In this context it is noteworthy that Pycnogenol 1 has an inhibitory effect on a number of intracellular metabolic processes including the expression of adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) (Bito et al, 2000), Calrgranulin A/B gene expression ( Rihn et al, 2001) and the activation of nuclear factor NF-kappa b . Pycnogenol 1 has even been shown to reduce blood pressure (Blazso et al, 1996).…”

“…bark extract (PBE), a mixture particularly rich in polyphenolic compounds, has been suggested as potentially useful for the treatment of psoriasis. PBE has shown to downregulate calgranulin A and B genes in HaCaT keratinocytes (Rihn et al, 2001) and to inhibit interferon-gamma induced adhesion of T cells to keratinocytes by inhibiting inducible inter-cellular adhesion molecule 1 (Bito et al, 2000).…”
