From Boatyard to Museum: 3D laser scanning and digital modelling of the Qatar Museums watercraft collection, Doha, Qatar

Abstract: This article presents the results of a project to 3D laser scan and digitally model 14 watercraft from the Qatar Museums collection, comprising a range of regional vessels: most had not been surveyed previously. The project used the resulting point clouds generated 2D naval lines and orthographic records of the vessels in their current condition, and photorealistic 3D digital models for gallery display. This case study provides illustrative examples of the intermediate stages and final outputs. It assesses the… Show more

“…There are currently three main ways to construct museum data resources. The first type is manual software modeling, which uses 3DS MAX modeling software based on the overall architectural drawing data of the museum [15] ; The second type is 3D scanner scanning modeling [16] , which scans the physical model through a 3D scanner to complete digital acquisition, and then combines modeling technology and LOD technology. Early digital museums mostly utilized these two forms, with the advantages of high model accuracy, strong reliability, freedom to roam, and the ability to present detailed information of exhibits from multiple angles in a three-dimensional manner.…”

“…На этом этапе из набора отдельных изображений, после соответствующей обработки, осуществляется создание (верстка) цифрового ресурса. В результате верстки мы получаем электронную книгу, электронный 3D образ предмета, оцифрованную копию фильма или фотографии в требуемом формате [6].…”

“…Numerous authors have also highlighted the risks of disruption of archiving standards in this period of rapid transition to digital technologies (Austin et al 2009; Jeffrey 2012). One possible solution to this challenge is the publication of supplementary digital data alongside academic papers (Castro and Drap 2017, 46) and the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology has taken the first step in this direction by publishing an online 3D model alongside an article (Cooper et al 2018). A similar facility has also been offered to the authors of the current volume.…”
