From bonito to anchovy: a reconstruction of Turkey’s marine fisheries catches (1950-2010)

Abstract: Turkey's marine fisheries catches were estimated for the 1950-2010 time period using a reconstruction approach, which estimated all fisheries removals, including unreported landings, recreational landings and discards. We added these estimates to the 'official' data, as reported in TURKSTAT, which are also available from the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The total reconstructed catch for the 1950-2010 time period (inclusive of the reported data) is approximately 30 million t, or 63% … Show more

“…Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) catch is a common practice in the Black Sea especially for the Turkish fishing fleet, which constitutes the majority of the fishing effort and the catches in the Black Sea. Particularly for small pelagic fish such as sprat and anchovy, IUU catches were shown to be very high (Ulman et al, 2013). Hence, the model simulated catches can be considered to be comparatively more realistic than what is reported by fisheries statistics.…”

“…Country-specific technical details on how these six points were implemented are presented in Coll et al (in press) for Spain, Bultel et al (in press) for France, Piroddi et al (in press) for Italy, and Ulman et al (2013) for Turkey, which collectively form the basis of this contribution (see also Table 1 for summary statistics for the separate countries, and Table 2 for a summary of results for each country).…”

“…This has resulted in recommendations to reduce fishing effort and capacity in most Mediterranean fleets (e.g., Ulman et al, 2013;Maouel et al, 2014;Maynou et al, 2014;Dereli et al, 2015;Merino et al, 2015;Samy-Kamal et al, 2015a,b). However, previous fishing effort and capacity reductions in the Mediterranean have proven insufficient.…”
