From Carbon Calculators to Energy System Analysis in Cities

Abstract: Energy systems in cities need to be decarbonized and are becoming more integrated via energy sector coupling. Today, cities often use simple methods to assess their low carbon targets, e.g., carbon calculators, and these methods use annualized carbon reduction potentials. For example, reductions from heat savings in buildings or fuel demand in transport. This is done because it is simple and fast. This paper describes a methodology that goes beyond carbon calculators and assesses highly renewable energy system… Show more

“…In contrast to the HOMER model, the EnergyPLAN model was only used for case studies in countries with middle (China [130]) or high (Italy [45], Croatia [52,117], Denmark [53,101], Ireland [124]) income. However, this model is also classified "as a simulation tool rather than an optimisation tool" [385] and only includes a dispatch optimisation.…”

“…The second trend of re-municipalisation can increase the democratic and political power of cities and local communities, and therefore potentially open up possibilities for local 4GDH avenues. As municipalities are confronted with the task of strategic energy planning during the transition from fossil fuels to renewables [16][17][18], ownership of supply capacity increases the array of action possibilities to control the development for the common good.…”
