From equity to power: Critical Success Factors for Twinning between midwives, a Delphi study

Abstract: The Critical Success Factors formulated represent the necessary ingredients for successful Twinning by providing a practical implementation framework and promote further research into the effect of Twinning. Findings show that making equity explicit in Twinning may contribute towards the power of midwives to take on their identified key role.

“…Because no recent standardized guidelines for reporting a Delphi study are available, this article followed the proposed areas for reporting a Delphi survey by Hasson and Keeney and other more recent literature. [13][14][15][16] Participants For a heterogeneous group, larger groups of participants are recommended in a Delphi study. Therefore, we aimed for the participation of approximately 15 experts.…”

“…Facilitating the process remotely without direct interaction between participants mitigated against group dynamics, politics and the domination of individuals during the process which is a risk factor when conducting research at the group level (Hasson et al, 2000). Content and face validity is supported by drawing the initial recommendations from the findings of a systematic review as well as nursing and midwifery stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds and experience (Cadée et al, 2018).…”

“…The widely distributed and anonymous nature of online Delphi studies allows panels to be more inclusive with regard to location, representation and power dynamics (Keeney et al, 2001; Powell, 2003). The value of Delphi studies is reflected in its growing use in nursing research (Button et al, 2019; Cadée et al, 2018; Massaroli et al, 2017; Meskell et al, 2014). For consistency, in this study, we report the findings using the Delphi reporting guideline checklist (Appendix S1) (Jünger et al, 2017).…”

“…His approach to culture helps explain, for example, why one twin may be less confrontational or the other more direct in their feedback, which allows us to contextualize certain comments by twins (Meyer, 2016). An understanding of the way the culture directs behavior is important for successful twinning (Cadée et al, 2018;Cadée et al, 2016). Adler and Gundersen (2007) are critical about any attempt to define culture because, they believe, the effort results in overgeneralizations that are meaningless when we refer to individuals within a culture.…”
