“…These drugs can reduce the signs and symptoms of axial involvement, however they do not alter the underlying mechanisms of the disease or prevent damage within the joint structure (Dougados et al, 1999). Between 10% and 60% of patients taking NSAIDs will have minor gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, indigestion and diarrhoea (Coles et al, 1983) The newer COX-2 selective NSAIDs are associated with a marked decrease in gastrointestinal side effects.
