From Imaging the Brain to Imaging the Retina: Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) in Schizophrenia

Abstract: Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging method, which provides an in vivo image of the retina. It allows for quantitative measurements of retinal and macular thickness, including single-layer analysis. Because the retinal nerve fibre layer comprises the first axons of the visual pathway and is unmyelinated, it can be considered a unique anatomical model, which may provide insight into the pathophysiological processes of diseases with a neurodegenerative character. In fact, past OCT studies … Show more

“…We wanted to investigate retina by OCT method to find clues for neurodegeneration. Because retina is accepted as an extension of brain by many anatomists due to embryological development and cellular structure (Schönfeldt-Lecuona et al, 2015).…”

“…However, further work is required in ASD to elucidate whether the RNFL or ganglion cell complex and inner plexiform layers could be a marker of neuronal dysfunction . While it is as yet unresolved whether individuals with ASD have subtle abnormalities in retinal structure, it is interesting to note that recent OCT imaging in schizophrenia has reported altered retinal layer structure in this genetic disorder …”

“…Butler and Javitt (2005) claimed that visual-evoked potentials point to a selective impairment of the magnocellular pathway responsible for object motion and the interpretation of spatial relationships. Developments in optical coherence tomography (OCT) also permit more extensive study of the retina of schizophrenic patients (Schönfeldt-Lecuona et al 2016). Given the oscillopathic perspective proposed here, it is significant that the impairments in Gestalt perception (Uhlhaas et al 2006) and multimodal integration documented in schizophrenia may be dependent on certain rhythm bands.…”
