Penentuan komoditas unggulan tanaman biofarmaka menjadi fokus utama Kota Medan untuk meningkatkan kualitas kesehatan masyarakat sekaligus menjadi lokomotif ekonomi berkelanjutan. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode LQ dan SS, IJAH Analytics dan Studi Pustaka (library research). Hasil analisis melalui metode LQ ditetapkan 3 komoditas tanaman biofarmaka Kota Medan dengan pertumbuhan yang berbeda dan mampu bersaing dengan berbagai komoditas sejenis daerah lain. Pengunaan IJAH Analytics membuktikan komoditas tersebut menghasilkan 14 protein, 52 senyawa kimia dan mampu mengobati 25 penyakit. Hasil studi pustaka memberikan informasi bahwa berbagai jenis penyakit yang dapat disembuhkan menggunakan tanaman Biofarmaka menjadi peluang ekonomi bagi Kota Medan. Menciptakan industrialisasi terhadap komoditas, melalui penciptaan produk akhir yang siap dikonsumsi masyarakat, promosi serta menyediakannya dalam pengobatan medis pada rumah sakit, maka komoditas tanaman biofarmaka akan menjadi lokomotif percepatan ekonomi Kota Medan.

Background: Zuotai (mainly β-HgS)-containing 70 Wei-Zhen-Zhu-Wan (70W, Rannasangpei ) is a famous Tibetan medicine for cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases. We have shown that 70W protected against CCl 4 hepatotoxicity. CCl 4 is metabolized via cytochrome P450 (CYP450) to produce reactive metabolites. Whether 70W has any effect on CYP450 is unknown and such effects should be compared with mercury compounds for safety evaluation. Methods: Mice were given 70W (0.15-1.5 g/kg, po), Zuotai (30 mg/kg, po), HgCl 2 (33.6 mg/kg, po) and MeHg (3.1 mg/kg, po) for 7 days. Liver RNA and protein were isolated for qPCR and Western-blot analysis. Results: 70W and Zuotai had no effects on hepatic Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and CYP1A2, but HgCl 2 and MeHg increased Cyp1a2 mRNA and CYP1A2 protein levels;70W and Zuotai had no effects on constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) ,CYP2B andCYP2E1 expressions, but HgCl 2 increased CAR and Cyp2b10 mRNA, HgCl 2 and MeHg increased CYP2B and CYP2E1 protein expressions; 70W and mercury compounds had no apparent effects on the expression of pregnane X receptor (PXR) and Cyp3a11 mRNA, as well as CYP3A proteins. 70W and mercury compounds had no apparent effects on the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) and CYP4A; but HgCl 2 tended to increase Cyp4a10 mRNA and CYP4A protein expressions. 70W and Zuotai had no apparent effects on the expression of farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and Cyp7a1 , while HgCl 2 and MeHg increased CYP7A1 expression. Conclusions: Zuotai and Zuotai-containing 70W at clinical doses had minimal influence on hepatic CYPs, and the effects of 70W and Zuotai on CYP and corresponding nuclear receptors are different from HgCl 2 and MeHg.

Though we have examples of Tibetan medical formula like Gabur‐25 (for circulatory disorders such as atherosclerosis) reaching the global market as a modern pharmaceutical product abiding all the modern European regulatory guidelines, it is not very common to have such path‐breaking innovations with classical formulas in a very competitive pharmaceutical field (Schwabl & Vennos, ). This is because Tibetan medicine integration into the Western regulatory framework, which only works for formulas, composed of herbal and mineral substances, while the inclusion of any kind of animal components makes the product registration arduous.…”

Outside the established legal framework of intellectual property rights, countries have pursued multiple pathways to protect and promote traditional medicine. As Tibetan medicine is a late entrant into commercialization, the proposals to propertize generally fall within the rationale of existing sui‐generis paradigms of Intellectual property. In this context, the article enquires the state of innovations in this sector viz‐a‐viz the property right approaches in place especially in India and China. It argues that beyond the usual complex medical science and technology led—innovations, the pathways of cumulative processes and creative additions through informal experiential learning platforms, where the transfers of knowledge become part of livelihood and social benefits (we call them “below the radar innovations”) is ubiquitous in Tibetan medicine. The trends and politics in two recent strategies of protection, that is, Tibetan medicine as economic property (emphasizing patents here among many others) and as a cultural property (intangible cultural heritage) are juxtaposed with these informal innovative attempts. The paper underlines that the productivity‐based economic rationale of these protection mechanisms should not obscure sustainability alternatives of “below the radar” (BtR) innovations in Tibetan medicine.
