From pole to pole: 33 years of physical oceanography on board of R/V POLARSTERN

Abstract: Abstract. Measuring temperature and salinity profiles in the world's oceans is crucial to understand ocean dynamics and its influence on the heat budget, the water cycle, the marine environment and on our climate. Since 1983 the German research vessel and icebreaker POLARSTERN has been the platform of numerous CTD deployments in the Arctic and the Antarctic. We report on a unique data collection spanning 33 years of polar CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) data. In total 131 datasets (one dataset per cruis… Show more

“…S2 ) on three cruises: PS107 in 2017 (10.1594/PANGAEA.894189), PS114 in 2018 (10.1594/PANGAEA.898694) of RV Polarstern , and JR17005 in 2018 (10.5285/84988765-5fc2-5bba-e053-6c86abc05d53) of RRS James Clark Ross . The data were processed according to standard routine 79 . Additionally, we use underway CTD data from an OceanScience underway CTD collected during PS107 in 2017 (10.1594/PANGAEA.886146) and processed according to ref.…”

“…Similar to PS111, both historic surveys entered the Ronne ice front region through polynyas, and CTD stations were approximately sampled at the same relative distance from the shelf ice. For an interannual comparison of source water salinities in Filchner Trough, we further investigated historical CTD stations collected between 1973 and 2018 (see Carmack & Foster, 1975; Driemel et al., 2017; Foldvik et al., 1985 for historic data details).…”

“…The ship‐based data available for the cross‐slope transects of PM, KN, and AP is combined with all available ARGO and seal‐borne CTD profiles located within the vicinity of each section (Argo, 2017; Driemel et al, 2017; Treasure et al, 2017). Optimal interpolation (OI) is applied to temperature and salinity of the collected data sets in the planetary potential porticity ( PPV = f / h ) versus depth ( Z ) space (the data points used for the OI are given in Figure 2).…”
