From Semantic Segmentation to Semantic Registration: Derivative-Free Optimization–Based Approach for Automatic Generation of Semantically Rich As-Built Building Information Models from 3D Point Clouds

Abstract: Highlights  This paper proposes a new 'semantic registration' paradigm for reconstructing as-built BIMs from 3D point clouds.  This paper develops a derivative-free optimization approach as well as a BIM software plugin to realize the 'semantic registration' paradigm.  This paper employs two processes of surface sampling and voxelization for efficient estimation of geometric errors between a BIM and a point cloud in the derivative-free optimization approach.  The effectiveness and the sensitivity of the ap… Show more

“…Because of design changes and unintentional deviations, constructing a BIM model for a completed building to improve the building's smartness is more complicated than a new building. Xue et al [78] proposed that constructing information models for built buildings is an ongoing challenge for the global BIM and computing engineering Advances in Civil Engineering community. Chen et al [79] proposed a method for automatically reconstructing the BIM model for the existing buildings based on multisource correction of geometric primitive (MSTEP).…”

“…e method improves the level of building automation and reduces BIM construction time. Xue et al [78] adopted 3D point clouds to generate rich semantics as-built BIMs automatically (Z 4 ). e above method opens up a new way for BIM to be created from inexpensive data sources.…”

“…Despite its potential, occlusion issues are unresolved because occluded surfaces turn into voids that usually merge with window and door contours. The works by Hackel, Xue, Adan and Krop [4,[23][24][25] also mention strategies regarding the challenges generated from occlusion in automated or semi-automated building reconstruction from point clouds.…”

“…After the rasterization of the edges is complete, the polygon is internally dyed using an intelligent system, called a floodingfill algorithm [31,32]. Unlike the typical seed-filling method [33,34] and others [35][36][37][38], the flooding algorithm can fill the area outside the polygon and backfill the interior point. The flooding algorithm avoids the complex process of finding interior points for polygons.…”
