The endowment effect is the term used to describe a phenomenon that manifests as a reluctance to relinquish owned artifacts, even when a viable or better substitute is offered. It has been confirmed by multiple studies when it comes to ownership of physical artifacts. If computer users also "own", and are attached to, their personal security routines, such feelings could conceivably activate the same endowment effect. This would, in turn, lead to their overestimating the "value" of their existing routines, in terms of the protection they afford, and the risks they mitigate. They might well, as a consequence, not countenance any efforts to persuade them to adopt a more secure routine, because their comparison of pre-existing and proposed new routine is skewed by the activation of the endowment effect. In this paper, we report on an investigation into the possibility that the endowment effect activates when people adopt personal password creation routines. We did indeed find evidence that the endowment effect is likely to be triggered in this context. This constitutes one explanation for the failure of many security awareness drives to improve password strength. We conclude by suggesting directions for future research to confirm our findings, and to investigate the activation of the effect for other security routines.

As the economy increases its dependence on the internet to increase efficiency and productivity in all aspects of society, close attention has been directed to solve the challenges related to internet security. Despite the large amount of resource invested so far in this area, cybersecurity challenges are still great as the media frequently report new cyber breaches. Although researchers acknowledge that great progress has been made in protecting digital assets, cybercriminals are still successful in their operations which are no longer limited to government entities and corporations but also individual computer users. To improve users' security posture, the researcher examined the relationship between Millennials' perceptions of cybersecurity threat, users' online security behaviors and avoidance motivation. The study focused on three constructs which are Perceived Threat (PTH), Online Security Behaviors (OSB) and Avoidance Motivation (AMO). The researcher administered a survey to 109 participants randomly selected in the United States. The Spearman's correlation test performed supported the analysis of the strength of the relationship and the level of significance between the independent variable and the dependent variables. The results from the statistical test provided enough evidence to fail to reject the null hypothesis related to relationships between PTH and OSB and to reject the null hypothesis regarding the relationship between PTH and AMO.

Decision-making for selecting response plans problem (SRPP) has been widely concerning to scholars. However, most of the existing studies on this problem are focused on public emergencies, and little attention has been paid to the decision-makers’ urgent need for solving the SRPP in response to public opinion crisis (POC) that may lead to panic buying of materials derived from public emergencies. POC has obvious characteristics of group behaviors that directly resulted from panics and psychological appeals of the public. Therefore, for solving the SRPP in POC, it is necessary to consider the deep-seated cause that result in panics and psychological appeals of the public, i.e., risk perception of the public (RPP). Firstly, the multicase study is employed to describe the SRPP of POC, and thus eight typical cases are chosen to analyze POC and its relevant response measures. Then, the RPP is described with prospect theory through considering the behavioral characteristics and critical sense of the public, the response measures of decision-makers, and the importance and ambiguity of POC. Further, considering the behavioral characteristics of decision-makers and the impact of alternative response plans on the evolution of POC scenarios, a new decision method for solving the SRPP with the intervention of the RPP is proposed by using cumulative prospect theory and a manner of comparing alternatives for each other. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the potential application and effectiveness of the proposed method.
