City branding is very important for the growth and marketing of cities. Urban planning, visual communication, and graphic design are used to build a distinctive city identity that represents its values ??and goals. This research examines how city branding improves local economies and competitiveness around the world and how physical and non-physical variables shape city identity over time. This research examines city branding, city identity, and 'place fuzziness' using a comprehensive literature review. The aim of this research is to find out how the form of city identity, especially in tangible terms, supports city identity so that branding of a city can be achieved from an architectural and urban design perspective. The research results show that city branding can attract investment and tourists and strengthen the character and attractiveness of the city. A complex combination of physical and non-physical components forms a city's identity, which underlies city branding. This research also emphasizes the need to resolve 'place fuzziness'—unclearness of a place's identity or function—to improve city branding. This research suggests that city planners and marketers must work together to ensure that physical development and social activities promote a city's identity, eliminate ambiguity, and improve its image. Creating a vibrant and sustainable city image requires integration and strategic planning in city branding and identity management.

PurposeThe purpose of this article is to revisit the concepts of city singularity and identity, as well as the concept’s related topics (i.e. place identity, place attachment and place dependence). The aim is to investigate the impact of development projects on people's preferences for old and contemporary features in modern cities. The evidence for this can be seen mainly at historical sites such as Heliopolis in Cairo, Egypt.Design/methodology/approachThe authors investigated how development projects affect place identity and city singularity through a three-step process. As a first step, an online questionnaire was administered to experts to assess the characteristics that shape the identity of local districts. In the second and third steps, interviews were conducted, followed by online surveys directed at Heliopolis residents and non-residents. The weight of people’s preferences was determined using multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM).FindingsThe results highlighted people's preferences to consider when developing projects at historical sites. Based on these preferences, the authors’ concluded remarks provide insight into some considerations for developing projects in historic places.Originality/valueThe added value here is surveying people’s preferences about development projects in historical places. The physical and social components interplay contributes to city identity and singularity. Based on these preferences, this investigation offers valuable insights into enhancing historical site development.

Scholarly studies have enriched the definition and theory of place identity since the 1960s. These trends are becoming more prevalent in the urban setting. This is because place identity has become a common theme in many researches and design projects and a thriving theme in policies and regulations to achieve sustainable development. In this respect, it is necessary to review these studies to identify the points of intersection and present updated evidence that incorporates the most relevant approaches. In this context, literature provides a deep understanding of place identity definitions through literature and research articles that discuss many factors and elements that identify place identity. This review divided the data into definitions, types, layers, levels, forms, features, dimensions, principles, and elements. Based on the research objective to present a reliable tool to measure the sense of identity in public places, the study used the descriptive-analytical approach to analyze, compare, and explore the collected information on place identity to present a matrix for evaluating place identity. According to the matrix, identity can be categorized into three axes: environment, people, and interaction; under two primary classifications: tangible and intangible. The findings confirmed a network of elements that were coded and defined. Parcel "elements" are evaluated by grouping them into three groups according to their contribution: positive element contribution, negative contribution, and neutral or non-contributing element. Based on the matrix checklist proposed as part of the evaluation strategy, the outcome indicates the extent of the place's senses of identity. The suggested matrix could be used to compare different places' sense of identity, and accordingly, the places could be developed based on these results.
