Conventional driven piles are made from steel, concrete, timber, or composite materials. These piling options have limitations with respect to corrosion, durability, driveablity, and performance. Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) pile is a new alternative that has already been adopted by various state Departments of Transportation in the United States for addressing the limitations that exist with conventional piles. UHPC piles are made of a cementitious composite material mixture that possesses exceptional properties such as higher strength, low capillary porosity, and high resistance to corrosion, making them a suitable option for use as a deep foundation. For several reasons, it is necessary to cast piles with a shorter length and splice them at the site to reach the desired lengths. These reasons include shipping limitations, unpredictable soil condition, reducing transportation costs, construction time, and damage during installation. This study aims to explore and summarize the currently available options for connecting UHPC pile segments. Accordingly, after a brief introduction on driven piles, this paper investigates various splicing systems that can be used for UHPC piles through reviewing previous research studies and field applications. The applicable splices are then compared based on several criteria such as capacity, durability, cost, and ease of application.

Esta investigación detalla la recopilación, análisis y procesamiento de resultados de diferentes aspectos de los puentes de la avenida 16 de abril sector la Concordia en la ciudad de Azogues, para estimar condiciones que permitan establecer factores que comprometan la estabilidad de los mismos. Para cumplir con los objetivos se determinan procesos de revisión de documentación existente, recopilación y generación de datos de los aspectos naturales, físicos y antrópicos que tienen influencia en la vida útil de un puente. El estudio determina las condiciones que influyen en la infraestructura y superestructura de los puentes, condiciones hídricas e hidrológicas, características del suelo en los límites definidos dados por la topografía. Entre los resultados de esta investigación están principalmente las afecciones que presenta el sector, uso del suelo, la resistencia del material de la zona, condiciones actuales de socavación, delimitación de la cuenca hidrográfica que influye en el flujo del agua así como también el caudal promedio del río; la investigación se empezó en septiembre del año 2018 y culminó en abril del 2022, todos estos aspectos permitieron determinar si los puentes de la avenida 16 de Abril sector la Concordia son estables; aunque adicionalmente se presentan otros criterios como la confiabilidad, nivel del servicio y estado de señalética que los puentes actualmente está brindando a los usuarios del sector y a la población de Azogues en general.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the experimental behavior and the reliability of concrete columns repaired using fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) under axial compression loading. The expression of the ultimate axial resistance was assessed from the experimental data of damaged concrete cylinders repaired by externally bonded double-FRP spiral strips. Design/methodology/approach The tested columns bearing capacity mainly depends of the elasticity modulus of both damaged and undamaged concrete have been considered in addition to the applied load and the cylinder diameter as random variables in the expression of the failure criterion. The reliability indicators were assessed using first order second moment method. Findings The emphasized test results, statistically fitted show that the strength has been retrofitted for all repaired specimens whatever the degree of initial damage. However, the gain in axial strength is inversely proportional to the degree of damage. Originality/value The efficiency of a new FRP repair procedure using double-spiral strips was studied. This research provides a technical and economical solution for retrofitting existing concrete columns. Finally, the random character of the variables that govern the studied system shows the accuracy and safety of the proposed original design.
