Fructus Ligustrum lucidi inhibits inflammatory mediator release through inhibition of nuclear factor-κB in mouse peritoneal macrophages

Abstract: Fructus Ligustrum lucidi (FLL) is a widely used herbal medicine for the treatment of a variety of pathologies. We have investigated the anti-inflammatory mechanism of FLL in mouse peritoneal macrophages. FLL exerted an anti-inflammatory action through inhibition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha production in mouse peritoneal macrophages. The maximal inhibition rate of TNF-alpha production by FLL (0.5 mg mL(-1)) was 60.88 +/- 0.30%. In the inflammatory process, nitric oxide… Show more

“…In addition, FLL treatment upregulates the Bcl-2 expression and inhibits the release of Cyto-C into the cytoplasm in the tibias of OVX rats. Similarly, FLL is demonstrated to possess the ability of inhibiting NF-κB activation and decreasing IκBα phosphorylation in mouse peritoneal macrophages (An et al, 2007). Further, the resultant estrogen deficiency by ovariectomy stimulates mitochondrial malfunctions for increasing ROS production (Yazgan et al, 2016) and Cyto-C expression (Li et al, 2014) as well as decreasing Bcl-2 expression (Lin et al, 2016).…”

“…We found that LM leaf extract at 0.25 and 1 g/kg decreased the percentage of abdominal Evan's blue extravasation caused by LPS. Therefore, we suggested that LM leaf extract similar to the reported of L. lucidum (Wang et al, 2002;An et al, 2007) inhibits inflammatory response caused by bacterial toxin LPS. This effect may be due to the blockade of inflammatory mediators' release and prostaglandin synthesis.…”
