Frugivores and fruit removal ofAntiaris toxicaria(Moraceae) at Bia Biosphere Reserve, Ghana

Abstract: In tropical forests, most individual fruit-bearing trees depend on frugivores for seed dispersal (Howe & Smallwood 1982, Wilson 1992). Seed dispersal enhances germination potential, provides an opportunity for seeds to escape predation under the parent plants, and reduces seedling numbers under parent trees (Şekercioğluet al. 2004). The way frugivores handle seeds and process them may influence the seed fate of many plants (Janzen 1971). The quantity of seeds dispersed and the quality of dispersal provided… Show more

“…Cricetomys spp. have mostly been considered as seed predators rather than seed dispersers (Guedje et al 2003, Kankam & Oduro 2009, Seufert et al 2010, but results of this study confirm previous findings in which giant-pouched rat stored seeds of Carapa procera and Detarium microcarpum in their burrows (Debroux 1998, Bationo et al 2002.…”

“…This result supports the assertion that Cricetomys spp. rodents are primarily seed predators, not dispersers (Guedje et al 2003, Kankam & Oduro 2009, Seufert et al 2009). However, two recent studies have implicated Cricetomys spp.…”

“…In West Africa, there are over 120 species of fruits and nectar eating bats, however, in Ghana there are about fifteen (15) fruit eating bats, [5], feeding on a wide range of trees in the forest landscape. They feed on leaves, flowers, and large proportion on fruits of different families of tropical forest plant species.…”
