Fruit Quality and Consumer Acceptability of Three Plum Types and 14 Plum Cultivars Grown in Maine for a Local Market

Abstract: Fruit quality and consumer acceptance were measured in 14 plum cultivars. In 2015, six cultivars of asian plum (Prunus salicina) and one cultivar of american plum (Prunus americana) were harvested partially ripe and tree-ripe. In 2016, three types of plums, asian, american, and european (Prunus domestica), were harvested tree-ripe. Within most cultivars in 2015, partially ripe fruit were rated as highly as tree-ripe fruit … Show more

“…The earliest ripening cvs, ‘Shiro’, ‘Black Beauty’, and ‘Beauty’, had the lowest SSC and MI (means of 9.1 °Brix and 0.7, respectively) ( Figure 1 ). Fruit from the cv ‘Shiro’ was also shown to have a low acceptance level in the study by Myracle et al [ 42 ].…”

“…Changes in the physicochemical properties in different tissues of QGP are shown in Table 1 . Fruit color, texture, TSS, and TA are considered as important quality characteristics of plums, which determines the harvesting maturity as well as consumer acceptance [ 21 , 26 , 27 ]. During storage at 23 °C, OF-TSS increased non-significantly ( p > 0.05) up to 10 days of storage, and there was a non-significant ( p > 0.05) decrease in TSS on day 14.…”

“…They are not suitable for drying as they are too watery and have lower soluble solids contents (12-15% SSC on average) and are usually not even suitable for obtaining juices, only jams. Japanese-type plums generally have also lower acid contents and lower ratios of SSC to malic acid than European plums [74]. Fruit ripening varies greatly from June to October, depending on the cultivars.…”
