FTIR analysis of crosslinked cotton fabric using a ZnSe–universal attenuated total reflectance

Abstract: Two cotton fabrics were treated with increasing amounts of a textile-finishing agent (1,3-dimethyl-4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidinone) to impart durable press properties. The Universal Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (UATR-FTIR) with a ZnSe-Diamond composite crystal was used to determine the amount of the crosslinking agent effectively linked to the cellulose after the required laundering cycles. Textile performance testing conducted on treated and untreated fabrics demonstrated the effect… Show more

“…The comparison between the spectra of cotton (Co) and Co-CMCF exhibited the presence of an additional shoulder at about 1711 cm -1 and a band at 1590 cm -1 . The band located at 1711 cm -1 which is assigned to C=O vibrations of the carboxylic acid groups of CMC (Abidi, 2005). The band centered at about 1590 cm -1 is due to antisymmetrical vibration of the ionized carboxyl groups COO - (Petropavlovskii, 1984).…”

“…DRIFT spectra usually evidence surface coating and inner composition showing then in some cases, large bands. Meanwhile UATR is considered a surface technique that use a zinc selenide crystal with diamond to analyze the surface material pressuring the sample against the crystal to assure that it has a good contact with the surface of sample and the incident IR beam, preventing loss of beam irradiation [21,22] .…”

“…In that case, the strength loss can exceed 50%. 16 Further investigations will involve the optimization of plasma treatment conditions to maximize grafting efficiency while retaining the original physical properties of the cotton fabric.…”
