This article reports on two novel visible-light-active strontium bismuthate photocatalysts (Sr 6 Bi 2 O 11 and Sr 3 Bi 2 O 6) prepared by solid-state synthesis for which the number of strontium atoms exceeded the number of bismuth atoms in the cation sublattice; for comparison, the bismuthate Sr 2 Bi 2 O 5 was also reexamined. All three bismuthates were characterized by a variety of spectroscopic techniques (XRD, XPS, EDX, DR, Raman, SEM, and EIS). Both newly as-synthesized bismuthates displayed photocatalytic activity toward the photodegradation of substrates in the gas phase (acetaldehyde) and in aqueous media (phenol), with the Sr 6 Bi 2 O 11 phase exhibiting a significantly greater photoactivity than the Sr 3 Bi 2 O 6 phase; by comparison, the bismuthate Sr 2 Bi 2 O 5 was photocatalytically inactive. Detailed photocatalytic mechanisms have been proposed to explain how composition and structure of the three bismuthates affect their photocatalytic activity. The role of point defects in their crystal lattice is described for processes in which the photocatalytic activity was inhibited. Inferences made were aided by examining the UV-induced coloration of these ternary metal oxides that provided information regarding defect levels within their respective bandgaps; such defects acted as electron traps and thus affected the photocatalytic performance of the bismuthates.

“…As can be seen, this band shows almost no change with Bi 2 O 3 content from 0 to 8 mol%, and it rapidly shifts to 780 cm −1 , which corresponds to the asymmetric stretching vibration of P–O–P bonds of Q 1 units, when further increasing the content of Bi 2 O 3 to 15 mol%. Besides, the band at 250 cm −1 is ascribed to the symmetric stretching vibration of Bi‐O bond in [BiO 3 ] and [BiO 6 ] units . It becomes pronounced once the content of Bi 2 O 3 exceeds 8 mol% which indicates that the formation of [BiO 3 ] or [BiO 6 ] may accelerate the depolymerization of glass structure.…”

Nd3+‐doped phosphate laser glasses have been attracting much attention and widespread investigation due to their high solubility of rare earth (RE) ions, excellent spectroscopic properties, and large damage threshold. However, the narrow NIR emission bandwidth (less than 30 nm) of these Nd3+‐doped phosphate glasses limits their further application toward ultrahigh power field and efficient fiber laser in new region. Here, we demonstrate the broadening and enhancing of Nd3+ NIR emission in laser glass of zinc aluminophosphate through tuning the glass structure and covalency of Nd‐O bond without limiting the radiative properties of Nd3+. The maximum bandwidth of 1.05 μm emission is broadened to 50 nm, which is comparable to that of Nd3+‐doped aluminate laser glasses. Simultaneously, the lifetime of 4F3/2 level is elongated nearly by two times. Structural and optical properties of prepared glasses were discussed systematically to reveal the mechanism. Detailed analysis on optical spectra and glass structure indicates that the bandwidth is affected by not only the covalency of Nd‐O but also the compactness of glass structure. Our results could enrich our understanding about the relationship between local glass structure and luminescence behaviors of active centers, and may be helpful in designing new RE‐doped laser glass systems.

Evaluation of Fireworks Residue Obtained From the Flash Powder Containing Aluminium and Boron

Herein, we report the characteristics of residues obtained after igniting the flash powder mixture consisting of varying amounts of Aluminium (Al) and Boron (B) with other energetic materials like potassium nitrate (KNO3 ) and sulphur (S). The nature of particulate matter collected after combustion was characterized through FESEM-EDX, FTIR, STA (TGA/DSC) and ICP spectrometer. FTIR spectra analysis reveals about the presence of various metal oxides, K2 S and K2 SO4 . On replacing aluminum by boron, more alkaline K2 S present in the residue was converted into the neutral K2 SO4 . FESEM with EDX confirm the presence of the elements like Al, B, K, S, O, etc., and the size of the particles formed after combustion is about 400 nm. The gradual replacement of aluminum by boron is substantiated from the analysis of residue through ICP Spectrometer. Boron blended fireworks mixture on ignition produces excellent performances and the residues generated do not have any hazardous nature.
