FTIR-ATR chamber for observation of efflorescence and deliquescence processes of NaClO4 aerosol particles on ZnSe substrate

Abstract: NaClO 4 aerosol particles with diameter of 5-20 microns are deposited on the ZnSe substrate. An FTIR-ATR chamber on the ZnSe substrate is set up to observe the structural changes of NaClO 4 aerosol particles at crystallization relative humidity (CRH) and deliquescence relative humidity (DRH). With the decrease of RH (relative humidity) from 96% to 24% in the efflorescence process, the absorbance of O-H stretching band of the aerosol solutions continuously decreases. A sudden decrease of the water peak is obser… Show more

“…In the laboratory study for atmospheric heterogeneous reactions, the advantage of FTIR spectrometry is that it can be used to investigate reactants and products without interrupting the reaction processes [8][9][10][11] . Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) technique and transmission FTIR (T-FTIR) technique are two kinds of applied methods, and generally the latter has better repeatability and its quantification is more accurate.…”

“…Thus, since chlorides seem to be distributed globally on Mars, the perchlorate salts discovered in soil samples of the Martian arctic might be ubiquitous. The presence of chloride and perchlorate salts on the Martian surface is not only relevant because of their ability to lower the freezing point of water [ Chevrier et al , 2009], but also because they can absorb water vapor and deliquesce [ Zhang et al , 2005].…”

“…This technique allows size dependent measurements but will not allow analyzing the total particle fraction (Johnson et al 1983). Direct deposition of model aerosol samples by gravimetric deposition onto ATR crystals gave promising results (Zhang et al 2005). Morrow and Mercer (1964) described a single stage point-to-plate electrostatic precipitator for electron microscopy using field charging to gather and deposit aerosol samples.…”
