Fucoidan Ameliorates Renal Injury-Related Calcium-Phosphorus Metabolic Disorder and Bone Abnormality in the CKD–MBD Model Rats by Targeting FGF23-Klotho Signaling Axis

Abstract: Background: Recently, chronic kidney disease (CKD)-mineral and bone disorder (MBD) has become one of common complications occurring in CKD patients. Therefore, development of a new treatment for CKD–MBD is very important in the clinic. In China, Fucoidan (FPS), a natural compound of Laminaria japonica has been frequently used to improve renal dysfunction in CKD. However, it remains elusive whether FPS can ameliorate CKD–MBD. FGF23-Klotho signaling axis is reported to be useful for regulating mineral and bone m… Show more

“…Fucoidan could also improve the kidney injury-related calcium-phosphorus metabolic disorder and bone abnormality by targeting the FGF23-Klotho signaling axis in vivo and in vitro experiments. [30] This meta-analysis could provide a therapeutic reference for the clinical treatment of patients with CKD stages 3-5 using the Haikun Shenxi capsule. However, there are some limitations in this study.…”

“…Fucoidan, a water-soluble polysaccharide containing sulfate groups mainly from various brown seaweeds, exhibited bioactive properties such as antioxidative, antithrombotic andanti-inflammatory, , mainly by modulating the gut microbiota structure. , In recent years, the role of fucoidan in regulating renal function has aroused intensive attention. Studies have confirmed that fucoidan could reduce extracellular matrix accumulation and ameliorate renal fibrosis and glomerulosclerosis . Also, fucoidan could ameliorate DN by regulating inflammatory signaling pathways, , inhibiting epithelial mesenchymal transition and fibrotic processes .…”
