Fucoxanthin Exerts Anti-Tumor Activity on Canine Mammary Tumor Cells via Tumor Cell Apoptosis Induction and Angiogenesis Inhibition

Abstract: Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid derived from brown algae. It is known to exhibit anticancer activity, including the promotion of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in several tumors. However, it remains unclear whether fucoxanthin exhibits anticancer activity against mammary gland tumors. In this study, we evaluated fucoxanthin activity against canine mammary tumor cells (CMT-U27) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) to investigate its effect on cell viability, migration, tube formation, and angiopoiet… Show more

“…MMPs play a pivotal role in assisting tumor cells' invasion and migration [129], while the activities of MMPs are specifically adjusted by tissue inhibitors' TIMPs [128]. In addition, Fx inhibits the migratory ability of CMT-U27 cells and HUVECs in both time-and dose-dependent manners [97]. These results suggest the inhibitory effects of Fx on BC cell migration and invasion.…”

“…Jang also reported that Fx possesses anti-angiogenic activity that is due to its ability to reduce the microvascular sprouting of HUVEC by 25% [97]. Moreover, the tubule formation of HUVECs is significantly inhibited after treatments.…”

“…Compared to the other groups, siTwist/FX@HES-CH treatment resulted in the highest TUNEL and lowest Ki67 expression in tumor tissues, indicating an increase in apoptotic cell death and a signi cant decrease in tumor proliferation. Furthermore, FX exhibits the ability to suppress the differentiation of endothelial progenitor cells into endothelial cells, which involves the formation of new blood vessels [70,71]. Meanwhile, Twist overexpression in breast cancer cells could also induce abnormal angiogenesis [72,73].…”
