Individuals competing in varsity intercollegiate sport are tasked with managing the dual roles of athletes and students. The purpose of current study was to simultaneously explore student-athletes’ perceived satisfaction of autonomy, competence and relatedness in sport and academics. A mixed-methods, person-oriented design was utilized. Quantitative data was collected with a sample of N = 238 student-athletes from various varsity intercollegiate sports. For sport, four clusters were revealed: ‘Low Need Satisfaction,’ ‘Moderately Low Need Satisfaction,’ ‘Moderate Relatedness,’ and ‘High Need Satisfaction.’ For academics, four clusters were revealed: ‘Low Need Satisfaction,’ ‘Moderate Relatedness,’ ‘Moderate Autonomy and Competence,’ and ‘High Need Satisfaction.’ Reflexive thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with a sub-sample of n = 12 student-athletes representing all clusters revealed four themes: (a) global factors sensitized student-athletes to the experience of basic psychological needs, (b) contextual factors determined fluctuations in student-athletes’ need fulfillment, (c) student-athletes perceived interaction effects in the satisfaction of the three basic psychological needs within the same domain, and (d) student-athletes’ sport participation had a cross-contextual influence on their need fulfillment in academics. Findings provide an understanding of student-athletes’ perceived basic psychological needs across the achievement domains of academics and sport.

Pre-match meetings are popular scenes in team sports, with coaches typically gathering the full squad within the dressing room and sharing their thoughts before the warm-up and/or competition. Whilst researchers have outlined the effects of informational or emotional talks, little is known about the actual verbal strategies that coaches adopt to influence their players. Therefore, this study examined the motivational content of football coaches’ verbal behaviours and underpinning perceptions of pre-match talks’ delivery. Five coaches ( Mage = 36.2 years) working at a La Liga academy were involved in six pre-match talks ( n = 30) and one semi-structured interview each. Talks were analysed using a two-stage coding process after adaptation of validated and motivationally relevant instruments, and interviews were assessed following thematic analysis procedures. Game strategy units were the most commonly employed topic across all coaches, which involved ‘neutral’ behaviours such as role description, game objective specification, and opposition statements. These were complemented with autonomy and competence supportive messages such as facilitating choices/opinions, offering rationales, supporting past performance, or ego-oriented and social climate support dimensions, depending on the coach. Data suggested that contextual factors could strengthen or attenuate the use of these verbal behaviours/dimensions. Build-up play contents were more likely to feature autonomy support game strategy comments than defending aspects, whereas lower-ranked and underdog opponents were associated with increased disapproving past performance and ego-involving statements compared to when facing higher-ranked opponents or playing derbies. Thus, it is suggested that the use of autonomy-, competence- and relatedness-supportive dimensions in addition to task-oriented messages should be reconsider by coaches if attempting to convey a need-supportive motivational climate.

O presente estudo objetivou investigar as habilidades para vida e as experiências esportivas positivas de jovens futebolistas. Foram avaliados 104 jogadores das categorias Sub-15, Sub-17 e Sub-19 de um clube de futebol filiado à Federação Paranaense de Futebol, que compete a nível regional e estadual. Foram aplicados o Questionário da Experiência de Jovens no Esporte e a Escala de Habilidades Para a Vida no Esporte. Na análise dos dados foram empregados os testes U de Mann-Whitney, Coeficiente de Correlação de Spearman e Análise Correlacional de Redes. Não foram verificadas diferenças significativas na comparação das habilidades para vida e experiências esportivas positivas por tempo de experiência, nível competitivo e categoria (p > 0,05). As dimensões de experiências esportivas positivas e habilidades para vida apresentaram associações fracas (p < 0,05). Os jogadores avaliados relataram que o futebol contribui para as experiências esportivas positivas e também para a aquisição de habilidades para vida. As dimensões de habilidades para vida “Solução de Problemas” e “Liderança” são fatores centrais que contribuem para o desenvolvimento das demais dimensões.
