Full determination of the dp backward elastic scattering matrix element

Abstract: The model-independent analysis of the dp elastic scattering in the collinear geometry has been performed. It is shown that the measurements of 10 polarization observables of the first and second order realize the complete experimental program on the determination of the amplitudes of the dp backward elastic scattering reaction. : 24.70.+s, 25.45.-z PACs

“…The general properties of the amplitude M for the elastic scattering of the spin type 1/2 + 1 = 1/2 + 1 have been studied in detail and are well known (see, for instance, refs. [5,11]); here we recall only the most important characteristics of M. In principle, the process of the elastic pD scattering is determined by 12 independent partial amplitudes. However, in case of forward or backward scattering, because of the conservation of the total spin projection, only four amplitudes remain independent and these four amplitudes determine all the possible polarization observables of the process.…”

“…The consequence of the ONE mechanism can be verified experimentally by measuring and combining the different observables given by Eq. (8). At least, one can find experimentally the kinematical region where Φ N 1 (W ) = 0 and the "Magic Circle" Eq.…”

“…Experimental and theoretical investigations of the proton-deuteron processes at intermediate and high energies have started some decades ago by studying elastic pD scattering [6], exclusive and inclusive break-up reactions [7,8] with the goal of determining the the details of the deuteron wave function at short distances and the relevant reaction mechanisms. Note, that in elastic backward pD processes it is possible to determine completely the reaction amplitude by measuring a full set of polarization observables (see, e.g., [9,10,11]). Hence, as in the electromagnetic processes one needs to measure different polarizations of the recoil deuteron.…”
