Full-Length Complementary DNA and the Derived Amino Acid Sequence of Horse Uteroglobin1

Abstract: After its original description as a steroid-dependent protein in the rabbit uterus, uteroglobin became one of the best characterized proteins. However, detailed knowledge of its physiological role remains an enigma. In this study we investigate how its structure is phylogenetically conserved in the horse compared to other mammalian species. Northern blot analysis showed that in horses, the main expression of uteroglobin appears in lung, uterus, and prostate tissues. Western blot analysis demonstrated that the … Show more

“…Expression of SCGB1A1 has also variously been described in extra-pulmonary tissues from diverse species. In horses, SCGB1A1 transcripts were present in uterine and prostatic tissues and absent in liver, kidney, heart, spleen, thyroid, pituitary and adrenal gland tissues [11]. …”

“…This globular protein has been suggested to act as a carrier, in particular for lipophilic molecules such as progesterone, phospholipids, and polychlorinated biphenyls. 362 Furthermore, uteroglobin has been shown to be able to modulate immunological activity. 363 Uteroglobin may be particularly suitable as a marker molecule because it is one of the few markers whose intrauterine concentration decreases when the implantation window closes.…”
