Full moon: Does it influence agitated nursing home residents?

Abstract: This study examined the effect of the full moon on agitation manifested by nursing home residents (N = 24). Observations of agitation were recorded on a behavioral mapping instrument, and occurrence of the full moon was operationalized in the three ways most commonly cited in the literature. The hypothesis that elderly nursing home residents become increasingly agitated during a full moon was not supported by this study. In all analyses, agitation was observed less often when the full moon was full than during… Show more

“…Direct observation was used in a small validation study for the RAGE (Patel and Hope, 1992a). Cohen-Mansfield et al (1989) developed the Agitation Behaviour Mapping Instrument to record observational data on specific categories of 'agitated' behaviour (including aggressive behaviour) as well as social and physical aspects of the environment. The instrument employs the ABC method of behavioural analysis (ie antecedents, behaviour and consequences) and uses stratified random time sampling method (ie each patient is observed for 3 consecutive minutes in each hour over a 24-hour period).…”

“…Conversely, a number of studies have found no relationship between the lunar cycle and behaviour. These studies similarly examined the link between psychiatric admissions [10], attempted suicide [11], parasuicide [12], crisis calls [13], accident and emergency admissions [14], trauma and violence [15], acting‐out behaviour [16], traffic accidents [17], or agitation among nursing home residents [18] and the lunar cycle.…”
