Full-Scale Stress Corrosion Crack Growth Testing of an X70 Spiral-Welded Pipe in Near-Neutral pH Soil Environment

Abstract: Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in near-neutral pH environment remains a major concern for high pressure pipelines transporting oil and gas in Canada since its first discovery in 1980s. A variety of laboratory experiments and models have been developed to address different aspects of this complex problem. Full-scale pipe SCC testing using soil box that mimics the condition in the field can directly assess crack growth in terms of pressure level, range of pressure fluctuation, soil conditions, etc. This type of… Show more

“…4,5 Unlike high pH SCC, the morphology of NNpHSCC is transgranular in nature. Extensive research has been carried out targeting different aspects of NNpHSCC, such as the failure mechanism, [5][6][7] crack initiation, [8][9][10][11][12] and crack growth quantification and modeling. [13][14][15][16][17][18] Full-scale testing 10,19 using soil boxes that simulate the field condition provides a viable means to directly evaluate the SCC crack propagation behaviors at different internal pressure levels, ranges of pressure fluctuation, and soil conditions.…”
