Full wave numerical analysis of wideband and high directive log spiralTHzphotoconductive antenna

Abstract: This study presents, for the first time, a novel design of ultra-wideband (UWB), circularly polarized and highly directive log-spiral THz photoconductive antenna. The proposed antenna is simulated in High Frequency Structure Simulator using gold as the antenna electrode material which is backed by a quartz substrate (ε r = 3.78, tan δ = 0.0001) and hemispherical silicon-based lens with a diameter of 140 μm. A comprehensive detailed parametric study of the antenna design parameters is performed in the frequency… Show more

“…The multiple peak response character is caused by the multiple internal reflection from the substrate interface (or excitation of substrate modes), which can lead to antenna pattern (gain and input impedance) degradation 60 . This phenomenon can be solved by making substrate thinner, using interconnection metallization, integrating a substrate lenses, or using a conductive substrate 61 63 . The difference for peak performance in the four bands may originate from the difference in coupling efficiency of the antenna.…”

“…Through simulation optimization, we successfully increased the impedance bandwidth of the antenna from 300 GHz to 350 GHz, and the relative bandwidth from 94% to 107%. Antennas with an impedance bandwidth greater than or equal to 500 MHz or a fractional bandwidth (FBW) greater than 20% are typically referred to as ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas [25]. For the proposed novel bowtie and circular patch combination terahertz antenna, the −10 dB impedance bandwidth (|S11| ≤ −10 dB) and FBW are approximately 350 GHz and 107%, respectively.…”

“…The performance of a MIIM rectenna can be further enhanced by combining it with a metasurface superstrate. The metasurfaces can be used to focus the incoming infrared and light waves for enhanced energy conversion [18][19][20][21]. The localized surface plasmons can be achieved using metasurfaces in the infrared range [19,22,23] and this too decreases the overall harvester structure as compared to reported large-size array configurations [12,13] for the same purpose.…”
