Fullerene-like MoS2 Nanoparticles and Their Tribological Behavior

Abstract: Using a new quartz-made reactor, large amounts of fullerene-like (IF) MoS 2 nanoparticles were synthesized by reacting MoO 3 vapor with H 2 S in a reducing atmosphere. The nanoparticles were found to be of high crystalline order; with an average size of 70 nm and consist of more than 30 closed shells. Extensive tribological testing of the nanoparticles in two types of synthetic oils-poly-alpha olefins (PAO)-was carried out and compared to that of bulk (2H platelets) MoS 2 and IF-WS 2 . These tests indicated th… Show more

“…This observation could suggest that while exfoliation and third body transfer of molecular sheets onto the asperities is a prevalent mechanism for improved tribological behavior of IF nanoparticles, the size of the particles also plays an important role in improving the tribological properties. Tenne et al [17] recently synthesized fullerene-like MoS 2 nanoparticles using a new quartz-made reactor. The nanoparticles were found to exhibit high crystalline order with an average size of 70 nm and comprising more than 30 closed shells.…”

“…The friction reduction mechanism indicated that nanoparticles in the thin film elastohydrodynamic lubricant regime restrict only a few layers of lubricant molecules to slide (shearing) on each other. It should be noted that nanotubes also showed promising properties for the lubrication [47,48].…”

“…Nanosized MoS 2 (nano-MoS 2 ) usually has better properties than bulk MoS 2 and attracts considerable attention. At present, some chemical routes have been reported to synthesize nano-MoS 2 particles [6][7][8][9][10]. In a previous study, a quick precipitation method was designed to prepare MoS 2 nanoparticles in various shapes [11].…”
