Function of Myocardial Contraction and Relaxation in Essential Hypertension in Dynamics of Acupuncture Therapy

Abstract: Forty-nine patients with initial stages of essential hypertension (EH) were investigated using phase systole analysis and echocardiography during acupuncture (reflexotherapy) treatment. It was established that even at the initial stages of EH increasing of myocardial mass and the disturbances of contractile and diastolic activity of myocardium take place. As a result of acupuncture a stable hypotensive effect, improvement or normalization of contractile function and diastolic values, a decrease of energy loss,… Show more

“…As early as the 1950's, acupuncture was shown to reduce BP in hypertensive patients [7,26,35]. Radzievsky et al [21] confirmed that in hypertensive patients acupuncture exerts a stable hypotensive effect, improves contractile function and reverses myocardial hypertrophy. Williams et al [32] found that EA induces a significant immediate post-stimulation shortterm reduction of diastolic BP.…”

“…There has been increasing interest in the western countries in exploring alternative medicinal treatments and in considering new therapies like acupuncture for cardiovascular disease. A number of small clinical reports suggest that acupuncture may reduce BP in hypertension patients (9,21,31). A study from our laboratory in animals showed that electroacupuncture (EA) alleviates experimental reflex-induced hypertension and myocardial ischemia (7).…”

“…Since 1950, some studies have reported that acupuncture can be used to reduce BP in hypertensive patients [21e23]. Radzievsky et al [24] confirmed that acupuncture plays a role in regulating BP, improves the contractile function, and reverses the myocardium hypertrophy in patients with hypertension. Richter et al [12] determined with the use of an electrocardiogram that acupuncture can prevent myocardial ischemia in patients with coronary heart disease.…”
