Function of Protein Kinases in Leaf Senescence of Plants

Abstract: Leaf senescence is an evolutionarily acquired process and it is critical for plant fitness. During senescence, macromolecules and nutrients are disassembled and relocated to actively growing organs. Plant leaf senescence process can be triggered by developmental cues and environmental factors, proper regulation of this process is essential to improve crop yield. Protein kinases are enzymes that modify their substrates activities by changing the conformation, stability, and localization of those proteins, to pl… Show more

“…Photosystem II (PSII) is critical for photosynthesis and function to increase the efficiency of light capture, therefore maximizing energy production in low light conditions. In addition, protein kinases are essential in the process of phosphorylation and photosynthetic acclimation in the core of photosystem II [15]. We observed a ferrous iron transport protein B at ~ 2-fold higher copy number compared to HL strains.…”

“…In tetraploids, one GH3.5 gene (Pop_A19G055012) was downregulated in the leaves at all three nodes, and one LAX3 gene (Pop_A02G088716) was downregulated in the fifth leaf. SAUR36 is a positive regulator of leaf senescence and mediates auxin-induced leaf senescence in Arabidopsis [ 46 , 47 ]. In the present study, two SAUR36 genes were significantly upregulated in tetraploids ( Figure 4 B; Table S4 ).…”

“…Among these, Ethylene Response 1 (ETR1) and Ethylene Sensor1 (ERS1) receptors, which possess conserved motifs of histidine kinases (HKs), play a crucial role in ethylene binding [ 157 ]. Constitutive Triple Response1 (CTR1) , encoding MAPK kinase (MKKK), is associated with receptor protein complexes and negatively regulates these proteins [ 158 ]. Another receptor factor, Ethylene Insensitive 3 (EIN3), activates numerous responsive genes, including Ethylene Response Factor 1 (ERF1) .…”
