Functional and adhesive properties of cement-based overlays modified with amorphous silica nanospheres

Abstract: In civil engineering, overlays should have appropriate strength and functional parameters. In order to obtain these parameters to the desired level, additional actions are applied in the form of dispersed reinforcement, surface hardening and impregnation. There is a lack of detailed results of studies on the impact of amorphous SiO 2 nanospheres contained in the cement mortar of the overlay in concrete floors on its bonding with the concrete substrate, as well as on its functional parameters. Considering the a… Show more

“…Similar behavior, regarding the stronger influence of seawater on decreases in slag-blended cement setting times, as compared with OPC, has been reported by Etxeberria et al (2016b). The addition of NS has been shown to have a significant effect on decreasing the setting time of cement-based composites (Ye et al 2007;Chen et al 2016;Szymanowski and Sadowski 2019) and thus a combination of seawater and NS leads to further decreases in the setting time of pastes. In the case of pozzolan-blended cement, a combination of seawater and NS (SW3-P) leads to a reduction of initial and final setting times by 28% and 32%.…”

“…The addition of nanoparticles to cement-based composites is a new trend due to their increasing availability on the market and knowledge concerning their manufacturing [11][12][13]. The authors in [14] performed studies on overlays with the addition of amorphous silica nanospheres. Some properties such as subsurface tensile strength were improved, but abrasion resistance was worse when compared to the reference sample.…”

“…When looking for opportunities to improve the natural environment, alternative material solutions should be tested (e.g., the use of marble and limestone powders) [ 7 , 8 ]. Scientists are trying to reduce the amount of cement in cementitious mixes by replacing it with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Li et al [ 9 ] described the filler technology that is related to the addition of supplementary cementitious materials such as mineral powders to cementitious composites.…”
