Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue Scale is valid in patients with psoriatic arthritis

Abstract: Background: Fatigue is an important symptom in psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Aim: To determine the reliability and validity of the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT fatigue) Scale in PsA. Methods: Consecutive patients attending the PsA clinic were assessed with the FACIT fatigue Scale twice, 1 week apart. Patients were assessed clinically according to a standardised PsA clinic protocol. Internal consistency of the 13 items on the FACIT fatigue questionnaire was measured using Cronbac… Show more

“…In patients with cancer and rheumatoid arthritis, the FACIT fatigue scale has shown excellent reliability and strong association with the vitality scales of the SF-36. [26][27][28][29] While most fatigue instruments measure the overall experience of fatigue over a period of time ranging from weeks to months, dialysis patients also experience day-to-day and diurnal variation in fatigue. Fatigue assessments using traditional instruments may fail to capture this variability due to recall bias.…”

“…Construct validity was demonstrated by distinguishing between groups known to differ on stage of disease, performance status, and need for emotional support (Lyons et al 2009). The FACIT-F was found to have high internal validity (Cronbach's alpha = 0.96) (Chandran et al 2007). Further, FACIT-F is a brief, valid measure for monitoring this important symptom and has demonstrated reliability and sensitivity to change in clients with a variety of chronic health conditions (Cella et al 2005;Tennant et al 2012).…”

“…Some of the PRO instruments used in PsA clinical trials were initially created for other diseases 14,15,16,17 ; other generic PRO instruments are also used in PsA trials with the goal of characterizing overall population health, including the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) 18 . PRO instruments such as Psoriatic Arthritis Quality of Life questionnaire (PsAQoL), the Psoriasis Symptom Inventory, and the Psoriatic Arthritis Impact of Disease questionnaire (PsAID) have all made strides to incorporate patient feedback in the disease-specific measurement of PRO in PsA 19,20,21,22 .…”
