Functional Carboxymethylcellulose/Zein Bionanocomposite Films Based on Neomycin Supported on Sepiolite or Montmorillonite Clays

Abstract: The present work introduces new functional bionanocomposite materials based on layered montmorillonite and fibrous sepiolite clays and two biopolymers (carboxymethylcellulose polysaccharide and zein protein) to produce drug-loaded bionanocomposite films for antibiotic topical delivery. Neomycin, an antibiotic indicated for wound infections, was employed as the model drug in this study. The physical properties and the antimicrobial activity of these materials were evaluated as a function of the type of hybrid a… Show more

“…Consequently, the amount of antibiotic or antimicrobial agents required to achieve a satisfactory effect could decrease significantly. In fact, some recent works have addressed the use of clay-based systems in combination with biopolymers to produce effective bionanocomposites with a biocide effect (Aguzzi et al, 2014;Ambrogi et al, 2017;Rebitski et al, 2018;Lisuzzo et al, 2020). In particular, examples of Gtclay bionanocomposites for uses in implants and scaffolds have been described (e.g.…”

“…In recent years, hybrid nanomaterials composed by biopolymers and inorganic nanoparticles have attracted growing interest within several fields, including biomedicine [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ], pharmaceutics [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ], food packaging [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ], remediation [ 16 , 17 ] and cultural heritage [ 18 , 19 , 20 ]. As evidenced in a recent review [ 21 ], both ionic and non-ionic polysaccharides can be suitable polymers for the development of functional nanocomposites, with excellent performances in terms of thermal stability, barrier properties and mechanical behavior.…”
